Dictionary for schools

One of the expressed needs of the different schools during the GFI Mission Trip 2010 is dictionary for the school library and also pocket sized dictionaries for the students. The dictionaries above will be sent to the different schools assisted, 1 big dictionary and 2 pocket sized dictionaries for each kind per school. The schools will be asked for feedback if they like it and more will be sent later.
This project dubbed as ....help stump illiteracy, Buy Me A Dictionary (BMAD) was conceptualized by Bernard Turner after talking to students during the visit to the schools. The pocket sized dictionaries were bought from Barnes & Noble, tax free. Upon knowing the concept behind buying bulk dictionaries in the future for Galing Foundation, Inc...the Barnes & Noble store in Cobb Parkway decided to donate 4 medium sized boxes of educational materials.
Everyone is enjoined to participate in this project...dictionaries are not necessarily bought brand new but at least published within the last 5 years.

Galing Foundation, Inc (GFI) 2010 Mission Trip to evaluate the 5-year school library development plan for Landan National High School

GFI's intervention with this school started in 2008. The school administration is very supportive to the project of library development that they lobbied for the construction of their school library given the influx of book donations made possible by donors and supporters of GFI in Atlanta.
The school is being seen a a model of good leadership practices for outsorucing and establishing external partnership to support the development of their school. The book shelves used in the library are the project of the Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) of the school.
The school adopted the the Youth Leadership Award and Best in English Award in 2009. In 2010, they started to have their Summer Arts Workshop that will form part of the annual GFI's Filipino Children's Arts Exhibit here in Atlanta.
The school used the Dewey Decimal System for their library indexing, cataloging, classification. It is very impressive that the teachers and the school teachers are utilizing the educational resources sent to them to imrpove the learning skills of their students. It is the first high school in the province of South Cotabato with support from an international non-profit organization like the GFI.
The school designated a school librarian to oversee and implement rules and regulations on the use of their school library. The school is also sharing their educational resource materials with the barangay council of Landan. The school has only one old edition of dictionary and the teachers truly expressed the need to have more dictionaries and encylopedia that are at least 5 years old edition/publication.
Other resource materials needed are the folllowing:
1. Mini-classroom globes
2. English, Science and Math resource books
3. National Geographic Magazines as part of their general reference and other world news resource materials e.g. Time Magazine
4. Visual aid materials for teachers especially in the Science and English subjects
5. Artwork materials
6. Music materials
7. College based reference materials for students from the community that have gone to colleges/universities and are spending their weekends back home for weekend research oppotunities
8. Maps and geographical visual aids
Thanks so much for the leadership of Maam Nemfa Macabenta, our GFI school coordinate Joseth A. Malida, the students, the teachers and the parents association.

The operation of the school is funded by the Maligo barangay local government.

Galing Foundation, Inc. (GFI) 2010 Mission Trip evaluation for the development of Maligo Elementary School library

GFI's intervention started in 2007 for this school. Since then, the school have recieved book donations from Atlanta.

In 2009, the school adopted the Youth Leadership Award (YLA), Best in English Awards and the Summer Arts Workshop. The books and other educational resource materials are kept inside the office of the school principal used as their mini-library as the school do not have funding for the construction of their own library. The students are using the mini-library per reservation made by their teacher. They have to log in the book for users and borrow books too. They have a system of having their inventory of resources they recieved and if there are toys or clothes, the teachers are prioritizing the indigent school children as recipients.

The school is also sharing their books and other educational resource materials to other schools in their Barangay that are even very far and do not have access to resources that they have. Their school served as the hub for library resource of primary schools in their Barangay and they have this arrangement in partnership with the barangay government officials.

The parents are also very happy for the intervention of GFI in this school. As parents, they are also learning from the books and especially story books/activity books as they are trying their best to help their children. Most parents do not have the experience of having books when they were in their elementary schools. They find it so much of a blessing for the school and their community to have access to quality reading materials.

Teachers have expressed the following school library needs:

1. More activity books

2. Science and Math books

3. English literatures
4. Dictionaries, Encyclopedia

5. Educational Supplies (especially art work supplies, globe, pencils, etc)
6. Science apparatus for basic experiments
7. Teaching aids for teachers (visual materials, big books serving as flash cards, etc)

8. Kids National Geographice Magazines or other visual magazines helpful to aid student's learning

During the on-site visit, we were able to turn over the book shipped last December 2009 and gave the laminated world map for the school.

Thanks so much for the warm reception by the teachers, students, parents and local government officials.

GFI started sending educational resource materials for public use of this Barangay since later part of 2008 as an offshoot of the assistance to the Maligo Elementary School. The barangay council is very supportive and active in the project implementation to the point that they wanted to have a public library that can be accessed by all college students and other interested individuals doing research even during the weekends.Because of this partnership, the Barangay got a provincial award for best practices in the province.

Resource materials needed are the following:

1. Accountancy books

2. Nursing, Pharmacy or other medical books

3. Dictionaries, encyclopedia

4. National Geographic Magazines

5. Time Magazine (they are the only Barangay in South Cotabato that has been receiving issues of Time Magazine along with books shipment)

6. Economics books

7. Geographical books, Maps

8. Travel Magazines

9. Globe that they could place in their public library

Thanks so much for Barangay Council of Maligo for the support to GFI library development project implementation in Maligo covering the elementary school, the day care school and the public library.
