1st GFI Mindanao Summer Arts Workshop

The Maligo Elementary School of Polomolok, South Cotabato, Philippines hosted the first Summer Arts Workshop on May 25, 2009 in partnership with the Galing Foundation, Inc. According to Jocelyn Robles, GFI Mindanao Coordinator, “it is the first time for these indigent students to do an artwork and have experienced the fun in their creativity”.

A total of 57 students participated for the arts workshop that was composed of students from Maligo Elementary School, Maligo Day Care School and the GFI Mindanao Kids Club.

The submitted artworks will form part of the upcoming month long Filipino Children’s Art Exhibit in Roswell Visual Arts Center, Georgia. Ms. Robles added that “the participants were able to explore and express their insights/views and perception about the United States of America based on the educational resource materials they got from GFI”. The student participants further expressed their gratitude for “ the fun, enjoyment, and the worthy experience that made them feel great this summer”.

GFI Mindanao outreach would like to thank the teachers of Maligo Elementary School, Maligo Day Care School, GFI local volunteers, student artists, local government officials and GFI school supply donors for making this 1st Summer Arts Workshop in a predominantly Blaan tribal school possible.

Rationale of the Nominee

Our school’s choosen awardee for Mindanao Youth Leadership Award (MYLA) is Kimberly V. Gantuangco, a grade six and a graduating pupil of Maligo Elementary School.

Kimberly or “Kimkim” as she is fondly called by everybody, is a consistent first honor pupil of our school from grade 1 to 5. This school year in her sixth grade, looking at her good performance in class, a good leader and a diligent pupil, it is not impossible for her to make it again to the top.

District Match Olympics, 2005-present, super Quiz Bee, STEP and others, were some of the contest represented by Kimberly to the district level since grade 4. An active troop leader of the Girl Scout of the Philippines, the Class President since 2006 and the President of School Governing Council at present.

Being president of the pupil government, she can lead the pupils in school do their everyday tasks like coming to school on time, attending the flag ceremony and maintaining the cleanliness of the school campus. Even with the absence of their class adviser, she can manage the class by letting her classmates behave and do their board works until their teacher arrives.

Our nominee is a good dancer. In fact, she participates actively during Barangay Foundation Anniversary being the dance leader in field demonstrations since her primary grades. She can even create dance steps and choreography, a big help in the part of her teachers considering her suggestions.

Kimberly is helpful, considerate and approachable. She is everybody’s friend. She has that concern for other, use her initiative thinking of some alternatives for the good and welfare of everybody.

A responsible and dependable pupil, soft-spoken girl with confidence, beauty and brain, vetting good example to everybody at her age to become an ideal person which makes us all happy and proud.

GFI Mindnao Outreach Report: Kipalkuda Elementary School receives library fund from provincial government of Sarangani

The provincial government of Sarangani turned over a check amounting to PhP 180,000.00 on April 28, 2009 for the construction of Kipalkuda Elementary School library. Present during the turn-over were Board Member Limuel Gacula Sr. representing Gov. Migs Dominguez, Mayor Elsie Perrett, Vice Mayor Tito Balazon Sr., Barangay Captain Digs Movilla and a teacher from the school.

According to Dan Evans, the provincial government officials were amazed of the available books, school supplies and other educational resource materials at the school during their visit in March 6, 2009. The books are mainly from generous donors based in Atlanta, Georgia through Galing Foundation, Inc. shipped to the school thru the partnership with the Datu Wali Mission (www.datuwalimission.org). With the increased number of books and other educational resource materials, the school does not have their own space for a library. This pro-active response from the provincial and local government for the need to have a school library in the school is indeed a very good indicator of support to eradicate illiteracy. This school library is the first one for this predominantly Tboli tribal community.

Educational development thru increased reading and English literacy starting from early childhood is also the top priority of the leadership of the provincial government of Sarangani (http://www.sarangani.gov.ph/quest/). GFI’s intervention for the Kipalkuda Elementary School since 2007 has played vital role in supporting the local and provincial governments achieve a quality education in this predominantly Tboli tribal community.

2009 Kipalkuda Elementary School Graduation

The Kipalkuda Elementary School (KES) held its commencement exercises on April 2, 2009 at New La Union, Maitum, Sarangani Province . In this momentous day of the school, a history has been made and a new experience for exemplary students. The Galing Foundation, Inc. (GFI) launched the Mindanao Youth Leadership Award (MYLA) and the Best in English award. The awarding was done during their commencement exercises in which the YLA awardee, Mary Ann T. Ungat, received a trophy engraved with the name of the school and of the recipient. Also, the YLA awardee received a framed certificate signed by the Philippines Honorary Consul General of Atlanta, Raul Donato, the GFI executive director, Toni Daya-Luetgers, and the project co-sponsor Cross of Life Church Social Concerns Ministry represented by Ms. Janine Dismer. The Best in English awardees representing each school level were also given GFI gold medals with their engraved names.The awarding was done by Dan Evans of Datu Wali Mission as GFI’s partner ministry in project implementation.

Dan Evans also served as the graduation guest speaker. He noted that the “graduation at Kipalkuda Elementary School went well. The Galing Foundation, Inc. awards were received with surprise and elation. I had an opportunity during my speech to ensure that parents, students and teachers understood what the foundation is, and why they are such a help to the school. I told them it is a genuine blessing that the foundation has taken an interest in them and their school and it brought a loud applause from the community that had assembled for the event. This year, the school graduated a total of 25 students which was their largest graduation class ever.”
